PAUL HARRIS FELLOW RECOGNITION
In 1957, a decade after Paul Harris’s death, the Rotary Foundation needed a financial boost. The Foundation was determined to institute the Paul Harris Fellow (PHF) in recognition of a donation of USD 1000, an amount still current in 2025.
The Foundation was clear that a PHF was not an award or a fellowship, simply a recognition of the donation to support the Foundation doing good in the world. Donations can be in increments and credited until the USD1000 mark is attained.
Rotary Clubs or individual Rotarians can make donations. In each case, the donor is recognised and credited with recognising a Rotarian or a non-Rotarian. In some parts of the Rotary world (including Australia), the PHF has been used to recognise service to the Club or the community.
Additional donations of USD1000 by Rotarians are recognised by adding a Sapphire (up to five), and then a Ruby (up to three) to the original recognition. When donations total USD10,000, Major Donor recognition is bestowed.
At recent meetings, Honorary Member PDG Rowley Tompsett recognised Bob Garrett and Geoff Hare as Paul Harris Fellows. He also recognised Karen Agnew with a Sapphire to her PHF.

Bob is a quiet contributor and has supported the Club’s barbecue fundraising efforts for several years. He had hoped someone would volunteer to succeed him this year, but in the absence of any volunteer, Bob has continued to provide support, expanding his role to include barbecues for the local schools with which the Club is developing relationships. Bob has also been the Club’s Public Officer, ensuring documentation for the Australia Charities and Not-for-profit Commission and ACT Government have been updated and provided in the required manner.

When the Australian Institute of Sport (AIS) invited the Club to return to managing the parking for AIS Arena events, Geoff stepped up as the coordinator. This has involved a huge effort over the past five months where 15 parking events have raised more than $40,000. Geoff’s good humour has contributed to the enjoyment other members have gained from the events and has contributed to him maintaining convivial relationships with AIS staff. Throughout, Geoff has remained the Club’s Treasurer, a position he has held for the past three years.

Since being recognised as PHF in 2020, Karen has been the driving force in its Birthing Kits project. As well as encouraging Rotarians to be involved, she has successfully invited members from the Kaleen and Lyneham Probus Clubs to participate. In the past five years, Karen has led the Club in providing more than 2500 Birthing Kits, distributed to places as disparate as Democratic Republic of Congo, Nigeria, Papua New Guinea, Kiribati, Timor Leste, Somalia, South Sudan, Uganda, Tanzania, and India.
